Shop, Save and Support Our Programs

In addition to specialty items offered by COPD-Support, we give you these two ways to support the Family of COPD Support Programs. We are here for you and would prefer not to become affiliated with any medical association or group which could even infer that they have any control or influence what you, or we, have to say in our mailing lists, newsletters, chatroom, forum, buddy lists or SmokeNoMore Program. Instead, we have chosen two e-commerce sites that will give us a percentage of what you buy at their facility. We do not want you to shop there just because we ask you to do so. We want you to go, shop, compare prices and if you feel you have a reasonable deal, then by all means buy from them because you are adding to our treasury to help pay the bills to keep the programs going. Also be sure to tell your family and friends as you need not be a subscriber to use any of these services. Try'em, we think you will like'em.

Books and Video Regarding COPD

Courage: Information for Life With Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease: The Handbook for Patients
by Rick Carter, Brooke Nicotra, Jo-Von Tucker, Thomas Petty The author, Jo-Von Tucker, October 12, 1999

Jo Von was once a member of our COPD Mailing List but was so busy with the support group which she heads and writing this book, she had to withdraw. In an interview with Amazon.com she said, "I'm the founder and coordinator of a support group here on Cape Cod for people with lung disease. As a COPD patient myself, I've personally experienced the devastation of this chronic, progressive, incurable disease. Through my volunteer and advocacy efforts, I've met and grown to love the most extraordinary group of people...brave individuals who are battling with great courage a debilitating illness. They have inspired me to write about my own battle with COPD". Click on the book title above to order from Amazon.com at $29.95.

Shortness Of Breath
Fifth Edition
by: Ries,Moser, Bullock, Limberg, Myers, Sassi-Dambron % Sheldon.

The above author list tells it all. This book is the combined experience and knowledge of Doctors, Nurses, Respiratory Therapists, Physical Therapists, plus a host of other experts who share their knowledge in an informal, easy-reading format. It covers such things as medications, oxygen therapy, exercise, diet, breathing exercises in an informative fashion, listing the latest advances and findings. Chapters on the physical, mental and emotional effect of COPD on the patient and the family are covered with compassion and understanding.

You will gain some new knowledge from this book and reminders on how to do old things in new ways. It is a good read with some decent size print and should be in every Copdr's library both for reference and encouragement.

Fifth edition, published by Mosby and obtainable at Amazon.Com in paperback edition for $7.96

Chairobics
by Cheryl Spessert

Cheryl is a Respiratory Nurse Clinician who created and produced this professional video in 1991 to fill a need of her patients. At that time there was very little of a practical and professional nature concerning the benefits of exercise for the respiratory patient. Shortly thereafter, an Ohio State University Research Study was conducted which validated the concepts that Cheryl presented in her film. While some of the hardware pictured is a little dated, the information contained in the film is first rate and as applicable today as it was in '91. The film was well received and used in many respiratory recovery programs around the country. However, the film is really intended for the individual user and is an excellent source of information for those who are just beginning to understand what the affliction of COPD is. As the name implies, the main topic of the film is a way to exercise with minimum hardware. No treadmill or exercise bike required; just a chair, a smile and a good attitude. The patients pictured, like me, are geezers who obviously are enjoying themselves exercising together with the help of some good exercise music. However, the film is not just for geezers and covers a multitude of other things which are important for the COPD patient to understand like target heart rate, better breathing techniques, perceived exertion rates during exercise, relaxation through mediation, oxygen hardware, use of Measured Dose Inhalers, stop smoking tips, and a whole lot of other goodies. The patient discount price is $29.95 plus $3 shipping for a total of $32.95. The tape is not available through Amazon.com but may be ordered toll free direct at 1-800-521-7303 (Price for institutional use is $49.95 plus shipping)  (August 1999)

Merck Manual

The pages on my home edition of the Merck Manual are pretty worn because is hardly a day that goes by where someone does not say something that I have forgotten or just never heard of before. This pub is reasonably easy to understand although there are a lot of 75 cent medical terms included. Once in a while I get frustrated because there are some things in the index that are not specifically mentioned on the page in question although it will be the correct section of the book. It contains 1,500 plus pages of which about 75 are dedicated to respiratory disease. Less than $25 for the hard copy book and can be obtained in paperback or CD from Amazon.com Click on the book graphic to order from Amazon.com. (August 1999).

Coping With Prednisone

One of the best reviews I saw of this book was written by Brenda J. Hoilman who was a RN and the author of our first personal story, "Like a Fish Out of Water". Brenda has now passed on but her review of this book is still on the pages of Amazon.com and I recommend you read it even if you have no intention of buying the book. The book actually has gotten mixed reviews but is well worth the $15.37 price for the hard copy. The book is written by an individual who had to go on a six month high dosage of prednisone and is balanced by the co-author, a doctor and her sister, who takes a more objective view of what prednisone does to the body. Most of the scary side effects of prednisone are mentioned but little is made of the fact that different individuals react in different ways to this valuable drug in the doctor's bag of tricks. Enjoying  Life With Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
by Dr. Thomas L. Petty, and Louise M. Nett RN RRT

This is the third edition of this publication and answers most of the questions that one would have about our affliction. Dr. Petty has been writing on pulmonary problems for a number of years and considered by many to be the father of oxygen therapy and pulmonary rehabilitation. However, this is the one that the afflicted will want as it provides the answers on treatment, rehab, breathing, transplantation, sexuality, support groups and daily living tips just to mention a few. Probably as good a one-book reference that you will find for the COPD patient. Click on the book graphic for ordering from Amazon.com for a tad under $13.00. (August 1999)

Breathing Disorders
by Neil F. Gordon MD, PhD, MPH

For less than $10.00, how can you go wrong? Actually, for a 120 page soft cover book it may seem a bit overpriced, but does take a hard look at the tie between breathing and exercise. Now if you are more interested in content than a hard cover book to look pretty on your shelf, you are in for a treat with this one. It has a few pages specifically pointing out the application for COPD folks and emphasizes something that you and I already know, i.e., exercise is the second most important thing that you can do as an individual to lessen the effects of COPD and improve your quality of life. (You are right - quit smoking is the most important). This is part of a series of books from the Cooper Clinic and Research Institute Fitness Series. Breathing Free
by Teresa Hale

A part of the review by Amazon.com says, "Hale's program is based on the work of Konstantin Buteyko of the former Soviet Union. It is easy to understand, but will take time and effort to master. But Hale says you have a choice: "Stay where you are, with your daydreams and your deteriorating health, or take control and make some effort to effect permanent change." Hale founded Britain's renowned Hale Clinic, whose clients have including Princess Diana, the Duchess of York, Tina Turner, Richard Gere, and Arnold Schwarzenegger". I am sure that I would love to have a body like Arnold, but very suspicious of any claim that it will solve all and cure something that can not be cured. This book is offered here solely for those that are interested in further education regarding what the "Buteyko Breathing Method" is about. Probably not something that an individual who has not mastered pursed lip breathing should be concerned about. Click on the book graphic to order from Amazon.com. $16.10 last time we looked. The How to Quit Smoking and Not Gain Weight Cookbook
by Mary Donkersloot, Linda Hyder-Ferryby

Do you want to quit smoking, but your fear of weight gain is stopping you? Or did you already quit smoking, and you're carrying unwanted pounds? True, the average smoker who quits gains 4.5 pounds. Some gain nothing, many gain 4 to 8 pounds, and very few gain up to 20 pounds. (After 10 years, however, ex-smokers weigh the same as people who have never smoked.) The How to Quit Smoking and Not Gain Weight Cookbook explains the relationship between weight changes and smoking, how your health will benefit if you quit, how to start eating better before you quit, how to replace what you get from tobacco after you quit, and how to cope with food cravings. You get a personal nutrition plan, plus practical content about exercise, snacking, restaurant eating, and motivation. The strategies are easy to put into action, with self-tests, "scripts" (how you talk to yourself), and checklists to help you personalize the program. The book presents 100 recipes with the nutritional breakdown of each recipe and "health check" notes explaining the nutritional and other benefits of the ingredients. This will be a handy resource for a new or veteran ex-smoker, and a motivating invitation to quit for someone who smokes for weight control. --Joan Price (Amazon.com reviewer September 2000)
